Bhaktapur Durbar Square

(UNESCO World's heritage site) Bhaktapur durbar square, Bhaktapur (Bhadgaun), Khwopa (in the native tongue)  is formed up of religious, cultural and historical heritage.Located 13km east of Kathamandu valley, durbar square consists of four distinct squares.

The major attractions around the area are 55 window palace, Batsalatemple, statues of BhupatindraMalla, Nyatapola temple, Bhairav temple, Golden gate, Lion's gate, Mini Pashupatinath temple etc.

55 window palace inside the durbar square was built by King YakshaMalla 1427 A.D and was renovated by King BhupatindraMalla in 17th century. It is one of the unique master pieces of wood carving with graceful environment. Nayatapola (five storey), is one the major attractions around the Bhaktapur durbar square. It is one of the biggest pagoda temple ever built which symbolizes of five basic elements. A detail of wood carving makes it aesthetically beautiful. The golden gate, door which is conquered by a figure of the Hindu goddess Kali and Garuda (Mythical griffin) magnificently constructed. It is one of its kinds in the whole world.

Along with these, pottery square is one of the major tourism sites of Bhaktapur. It is well known for artistically shaped potteries made out of clay. It is fired to a porous state which can be made impervious to liquids by the use of a glaze.

Cultural traditions, BisketJatra (The Nepalese New Year Celebration) takes place every 1st day of the year, in which chariots are pulled through the streets and eventually a tug of war over them determines, who will be blessed with good fortune in the coming year.
